The Town of Halton Hills is in the process of reviewing its policies permitting the creation of accessory dwelling units.
The examination is in response to the Province of Ontario's Bill 23, the More Homes Built Faster Act.
Accessory units are extra, separate living spaces within existing homes. These can include basement apartments, garage dwellings and nanny suites.
The Town approved a revised accessory dwelling unit policy in 2019. This allowed such units in single, semi-detached and townhouses within a limit of 110 square metres of floor space in certain urban and rural areas.
Bill 23 now requires municipalities to allow up to three accessory units on a lot in urban areas wherever single, semi-detached and townhouses are already permitted.
A statutory public meeting is expected to take place in either the spring or summer. A final recommendation for council approval will be presented in the fall.
