A pair of restaurateurs are breathing new life into a familiar space in downtown Georgetown.
Michelle and Wei Sheng Huang are the faces behind Huangs Fine Eatery, located in the former Yong’s legendary storefront at 109 Main St. S.
Wei Sheng Huang says he wants to bring his culinary passion to the new food joint.
“I enjoy cooking," he said, noting, "If the customer is happy, I am happy.”
The Huangs are both from southern China and have three decades of experience in the restaurant business. Wei Sheng Huang discovered his love of cooking when his brother taught him. The siblings were living in England at the time.
“His family really likes cooking,” Michelle noted.
The couple is carrying on where Yong’s left off with an extensive dine-in and take-out menu. Patrons can choose from close to 200 dishes spanning vegetarian, rice, chicken, beef, and sweet and sour categories.
Various chop suey dishes, kung pao shrimp, fried rice recipes and moo guo gai pan don’t come close to illustrating the variety on offer. But the choice of Hakka food is where Huangs differs from most other Chinese restaurants.
The Hakka ethnic group - whose name translates to “guest people” in Cantonese - trace their origins to central China. Their food is, in short, spicy. Chili fish, hot garlic chicken and General Tao beef are a small taste of Hakka flavour.
The Huangs say Cantonese chicken, chicken balls, lo mein and chow mein are some of the most popular choices.
The restaurant hopes to bring families together with an assortment of dinners for two, three, four and more. And of course, there are lunch specials for both the Chinese and Hakka dishes.
Anyone wanting to host private functions at the local downtown Georgetown landmark location can do so as well.
