Moving into a new home can be both exciting and exhausting. It is easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed with the number of responsibilities that come with transitioning into a new space! We have created a helpful guide on how to unpack after moving. We believe following a straightforward system and going in an efficient order of priority is the best way to approach this often daunting task.
1) Unpack With a System
Staying organized and unpacking with a clear and defined system will make things run smoothly and reduce the usual stress of moving. Establish a landing zone for the bulk of your boxed items (maybe the garage or the main floor living room).
If you have been diligent with labelling each box with a description of its contents, then your job is already going to be so much easier! Group boxes that belong in the same room together and work from there.
2) Start With Necessities
Every moving guide suggests packing a box dedicated to necessities so that they are readily available when needed throughout your moving process. This can include clothes, toiletries, medications, and electronics like smart devices needed for work. Ensure that you have these boxes placed where you may easily find them and have them nearby whenever you need to grab something.
3) First: Unpack the Kitchen
The kitchen is often considered the center of the home and where the family usually gathers most frequently. Get the kitchen up and running before other areas of the home, but don’t worry about carefully placing each spice or pan in its place. In other words, there’s a lot to unpack here, so only focus on the bare kitchen necessities. You will need to utilize the kitchen sooner than most other rooms of your new home.
Install all larger appliances and then plug in any smaller ones that will make your life a bit easier, such as the toaster and coffee maker.
4) Second: Unpack the Bedrooms
After a long day of moving and unpacking you will want to have a comfortable place that is ready for you when you need a nap or to have a peaceful sleep to energize for another busy day of unpacking. Prioritize setting up the beds first so that everyone can get a restful sleep without worrying about having to complete more tasks when all you really want to do is rest!
Setting up your bedroom shouldn’t take long. Assemble your bed frame, set the mattress on top, and make the bed with a set of clean sheets. You can then set up your nightstands, dressers, desks, and anything else you may need in your space.
5) Third? The Bathrooms!
Since bathrooms are primarily small spaces and fully equipped, all you need to worry about are toiletries and bath towels. Unpack your most essential items, like your toothbrush, toothpaste, body wash, and shampoo.
6) Assemble & Arrange Furniture
It is best to assemble and arrange your furniture in a way that makes the most sense. When furniture is in pieces, it is easier to transport upstairs, so you should build bed frames, dressers, and desks in their respective rooms. Carrying an assembled bed frame upstairs, for example, would be one large headache, and you could potentially damage your walls if you are not careful.
You can make a plan of where you want your furniture to go, but do not stress too much about the placement at first. Just have your furnishings assembled and placed in an acceptable way that allows for functionality in the room. There will always be a time in the future to organize and rearrange things to be just how you want them as you continue to get used to your new home.
7) Last: Unpack the Basement and Garage
The basement and garage are amongst the final rooms to be unpacked. Try to clean your basement and garage before you start unpacking, as this will help you stay more organized. Any tools and supplies you’ll need to assemble furniture, for example, should be unpacked.
