Halton Hills Minor Hockey recently went the extra mile to raise awareness and funds for those battling cancer.
The local players held a ‘Turn the Rink Pink’ event for breast cancer awareness, using pink tape to transform their sticks and decorating their helmets for the occasion.
All rep teams and their families also helped sell 50/50 tickets benefitting Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills (CAShh), with $,4,052 raised.
“We asked our friends and family to buy tickets. Some of the moms posted the fundraiser on social media and that got a lot of interest,” said 13-year-old Tyler Fairhead, captain of the U14AA Halton Hills Thunder team, which raised the most funds.
“People wanted to support our hockey family and buy tickets.”
With cancer touching the lives of so many, the cause hit close to home for Halton Hills Minor Hockey.
Fairhead said he and his fellow players were glad to participate in turning the rink pink as two of his team mates’ mothers have been battling breast cancer.
“We wanted to support them and everyone battling breast cancer,” he said.
CAShh is a community-based organization of volunteers that supports cancer patients with everything from transportation to and from treatment centres to necessary equipment and supplies.
