New Georgetown barbershop a place to truly let your hair down

Relaxation is the rationale behind many of the design choices in Rami Abumazin's barber shop.

Georgetown should perhaps change its name to Barbertown as another hair-cutting business has set up shop - the second in a matter of weeks.

Rami’s Lounge, located in the downtown core at 28 Main St. S., opened its doors on May 15 and is already making waves with its cool, modern aesthetic.

But the shop isn't just all looks. Clients can rest assured that they're in the capable hands of owner Rami Abumazen, who is bringing his 17 years of barbering experience to the downtown business community. The new entrepreneur wants to differentiate his business from others by making it a place where people can really let their hair down.

“Some people just come to get a break, to relax, listen and talk,” Abumazen said in speaking about his business’ ethos. “Barbering is a good job. It keeps you close to the people. If you like to be around people, it is easy to start as a barber.”

The name Rami’s Lounge was chosen because it's exactly that - a lounge. Abumazen has designed it to be a place where people can kick up their feet and leave their troubles at the door while they wait to be called up by one of the barbers. In the back of the shop is a comfy couch, a TV to watch the game, free coffee and, for the younger clients, treats.

Once it's time to sit in the chair, the relaxation changes to pampering. Aside from the standard haircuts, patrons can choose between beard trims, beard stylings, hot towel shaves and hair washes.

Though the shop primarily focuses on men’s and boy’s cuts, women are welcome as well for simple trims.

All of this is a culmination of, Abumazen says, a dream of opening his own barber shop. He got started in the hair-cutting business in 2007 in his homeland of Palestine. He arrived in Vancouver in 2017, but opted to move to Toronto after two weeks with the help of a friend. He worked at another Georgetown barber shop for a few years.

He said he liked the friendly people of Georgetown and decided it would be the place for him to set up shop. He hopes to grow the dream by one day opening a second location.

Rami’s Lounge is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. More information can be found on its Facebook page
