It’s become a fixture in downtown Acton; the place to go for a unique sweet treat or healthy snack.

70 Below Treats recently expanded its presence in the town’s core, taking over the other half of the building at 9 Mill St. E. and increasing its operation to include 12 freeze dryers.

In just a matter of years, the business specializing in freeze-dried desserts, candies and fruits that started in chef Courtney Stanley’s home-base commercial kitchen has become a national sensation, with its products now in over 100 retail locations across the country.

The company has also trademarked its name and started supplying wholesalers who fulfill orders for candy and confectionery stores throughout Canada.

“I want to keep expanding and growing the company,” said Stanley, who noted future plans include hiring chefs to help produce a line of freeze-dried meals.

“We’re working with the CFIA (Canada Food Inspection Agency) to eventually release the meals, but it’s a big process because it involves meat.”

70 Below’s current product lineup has a little something for everyone’s tastes, from a wide selection of fruits and candies to 13 varieties of desserts like freeze-dried ice cream, sorbet, cheesecake and vegan soft serve that are carefully crafted with Stanley’s recipes.

“That’s what sets us apart from all the other freeze-dried companies popping up everywhere - you’re never going to find those desserts anywhere else,” said Stanley. “They’ve all been specially formulated for the ultimate freeze-dried experience. As you eat it, your palate will pick up on the different flavours in the recipes.”

Freeze-dried cookie dough is a relatively new addition to the menu and is proving to be quite popular, along with the sorbet.

But the number one best seller remains freeze-dried Skittles, said Stanley, with strawberries also routinely selling out.

Those who’d like to try their hand at freeze-drying items of their choice can take advantage of 70 Below’s custom services, where people can rent the store’s machines and be guided along on how to prep, freeze dry and package their favourite foods.
