Sad news to share as I’ve learned the planned visit to Sunnybrook scheduled for February 26 has been cancelled. They have experienced a number of outbreaks recently and have tightened restrictions until at least March. Maybe a visit later in the year can be arranged.
Our oldest member, Sytska Drijber, just turned 103 and Peggy was there to help celebrate her birthday. Sytska was recently interviewed by Zach Dunn, a young man travelling across Ontario interviewing Second World War veterans. Check him out on YouTube, and hear about Sytska’s husband Oscar’s escape from Colditz. The late Oscar Drijber taught school in Acton.
Zach also interviewed another one of our Second World War veterans, Stan Bowen - a 60-year member of branch 197.
We are proud of the success our senior darts team achieved at the recent zone level, with the following members going on to district. Keith Andrews and Wayne Amitrault qualified at singles, doubles and team level, while Teresa Uiterwyk and Edward Ebbinge qualified at doubles and team. The remaining team members going through are: Trevor Marais, Jim Haggett, Sue Poulsen and Bob Service.
I’m told that everybody had a wild time at the recent winter horseshoe tournament, in spite of the snowy conditions. Top honours went to Teresa Uiterwyk and her partner Judy Oerlemans (from Georgetown Legion.)
Peggy would like to thank Keith Andrews for spearheading the food drive on the weekend of January 28 and 29. Keith in turn thanks everybody who contributed to the drive. He delivered 126 pounds of food along with a cash donation of $120. Well done, branch 197.
On January 27 we saw 30 Remembrance Day poster and literary contest winners accept their awards at a ceremony held in the main hall. Plenty of parents, grandparents and siblings were in attendance.
The Winter Family Day Festival is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 19 and promises to be a great outing for everyone. This event is open to all members of the community.
There will be another Swiss Chalet dinner on Friday, Feb. 24 followed by a trivia night.
Please check the webpage at legion197.com, and in addition we will be posting information on social media.
