Blaze Fire Academy - a joint initiative of the Oakville, Halton Hills, Milton and Burlington fire departments - is offering a trio of sessions throughout 2023 focused on careers in the fire service.
The programs are geared toward encouraging adults and youth to join the fire service and give attendees a comprehensive understanding of firefighting, fire prevention, public education, training, dispatch communications and administration.
The first session is aimed at individuals 21 and older with non-firefighting backgrounds who are looking to switch careers. With a variety of roles available beyond just firefighting, applicants with diverse skill sets are welcome. This module consists of online classes on June 6 and 12 and in-person training on June 21.
An online application is available and will be accepted until May 21, with 24 spots available.
Following this, a training program for two dozen young women between the ages of 15 and 18 will run on Aug. 9 and 10. Successful applicants will participate in immersive activities as well as an information session with post-secondary institutions that offer courses in fire services. Applications for this program are expected to open late next month.
The final program, also with 24 spots available, is for anyone aged 15 and older of all genders, with or without experience in fire services. Applications will open in October for the November session.
“We believe in building inclusive and diverse teams that reflect our growing communities. Together with our partners in Halton Region's fire departments, we welcome individuals from all walks of life to explore a meaningful and impactful career through Blaze Fire Academy," said Oakville Fire Chief Paul Boissonneault.
