CFUW-Georgetown is one of many CFUW chapters across the country whose members have been working throughout the summer creating panels of colourful materials for an assembly on Parliament Hill on September 21.

The panels – presented as Pieces4Peace – are to recognize The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”), which is observed around the world each year on September 21. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to building a Culture of Peace.

Women and their families are deeply affected by conflict, but their voices are too often lost in the noise of combat. Panels represent the silent voices of women who want to be heard at the negotiating table. Their firm belief is that fighting is cruelly destructive and damaging to all sides. On the other hand, calm negotiation permits constructive possibilities for resolution while minimizing harm.

“Our chapter is very proud of the work produced by our members. No special funds were used to create the panels. They were made almost entirely from re-purposed fabric and materials and represent our chapter’s hope for peaceful co-existence,” says CFUW-Georgetown President Margaret Teasdale.

“It is not practical for our members to be in Ottawa on Peace Day, but our panels will join the hundreds of other panels flying to Ottawa from all provinces,” Teasdale continued.

CFUW (formerly known as Canadian Federation of University Women) is a non-profit, non-partisan, self-funded organization with 94 clubs across Canada with over 6,600 members.
