The start of the school year is just around the corner, which means the roads will be full of school buses with young riders once again.

For some, it will be the first time getting on any mode of transport without a parent or guardian.

Halton Student Transportation Services (HSTS) is encouraging students, and their families, who will be riding the school bus for the first time to attend the First-Time Rider Program on August 26.

The program will feature a presentation on school bus safety, and a demonstration on a school bus. Company safety officers and bus drivers will also speak to the students and their families about how to properly get on and off the bus, proper school bus behaviour, how to cross the street to get to a bus, and general school bus safety.

All programs will run on August 26.

In Burlington, the program is held at Notre Dame Secondary School between 9 and 11 a.m.
