Author, award-winning speaker and survivor Samra Zafar is coming to Halton Hills to speak about intimate partner violence.

She's set to share her story during Safe Haven: A Conversation on Overcoming Domestic Violence, which will take place April 5 at 7 p.m. at the John Elliott Theatre.

The event is being held in support of Halton Women's Place, in partnership with SAFE Halton, Halton Regional Police and the Canadian Federation of University Women Georgetown.

Zafar was brought over to Canada as a child bride under the promise that her desire for education would be honoured, but this was not the case. She endured 10 years of abuse at the hands of her husband, who was 11 years her senior.

She penned the bestselling book A Good Wife: Escaping The Life I Never Chose, which made the CBC's list of best books in 2019. She's also the founder of Brave Beginnings, which sets up abuse survivors with mentors who can help.

Free tickets for the event can be acquired from the John Elliott Theatre's website or in person at the box office.

The evening is organized by Georgetown local Aditee Goswami. For more information about her event, contact her at 647-871-3551 or [email protected].

If you are, or know someone who is, experiencing intimate partner violence, Halton Women's Place has the resources to help.
