It was 8 a.m. and Peter Mumford was starting to feel the effects of playing squash for 14 straight hours.
And then his upcoming opponents made a proposal – beat us and we’ll donate an extra $25.
“My lunges were not as good as they should have been, but it helped me push myself a little harder,” he said of his 24-hour squash marathon at the Georgetown Racquet Club. “It was a bit of a boost and I needed it.”
Mumford won the games, helping add to his tally and surpass his goal by raising $5,624 for the Georgetown Hospital Foundation.
“It feels great. A huge thanks to everyone that donated or came out to cheer me on,” he said. “It’s great to be able to give back to the community and show support for the people who work tirelessly to look after us.”
It was the second time Mumford has completed the 24-hour squash marathon to raise money for the local hospital. He raised $3,500 in 2022.
This year he played 144 games over the 24 hours, winning 125 of them. He lost seven pounds from start to finish and said it took him two or three days to recover.
But the muscle aches were all worth it.
“There are times you wonder ‘Why am I doing this?’” he said. “But I’m already talking about when to do it again.”
