Halton Hills Mayor Ann Lawlor accepts a cheque for $10,000 from Georgetown Slopitch League president Jamie Chouinard. The money will go toward building washrooms and a concession stand at Trafalgar Sports Park.

A local league is pitching in for the community's benefit once again.

The Georgetown Slopitch League was at Halton Hills Council Monday to present a cheque for $10,000 to the Town. The money will go toward building a pavilion with washrooms and a concession stand in Trafalgar Sports Park.

“The non-profit and volunteer groups make a huge contribution to our Town,” said Mayor Ann Lawlor. “They contribute in a major way to life, spirit and the financial needs of the town.”

The league also donated $50,000 toward the project last year and, along with the Halton Hills Minor Baseball Association, contributed $350,000 to help fund the construction of three new diamonds, completed in 2020, at the park.

“It’s a great partnership with the Town that goes way back to the fields at Gellert (Community Park),” said league president Jamie Chouinard.

“They match every dollar we raise. When TSP (Trafalgar Sports Park) was in the planning stages for years, we raised every dollar we could to kickstart that. And now we’re continuing our support with $10,000 more.”

The recreational adult league has 56 teams in seven divisions with close to 1,000 players. But Chouinard said the league supports projects that benefit all leagues in town. By supporting projects that also help minor ball, it will develop a love for the sport that will keep kids playing when they become adults.

“It’s part of our mandate to grow ball in Georgetown,” Chouinard said. “Anything that helps build an interest in playing ball.”
