Georgetown student's event up for Ontario people's choice award

Unique Culture Days event combined robotics and music, and local residents can vote in support of it until tomorrow night

A local student-led Culture Days activity has been nominated for a provincial people’s choice award.

Georgetown District High School student Anika Vats created Arts-STEM Night, an event that combined science, arts and culture. It's now in the running for the Ontario Culture Days Spotlight People’s Choice Award.

Voting for the award is open until 11:59 p.m. Thursday and can be done through the Ontario Culture Days website.

During this fall’s local Culture Days activities, Vats and the school’s robotics team provided an opportunity for residents to come to the Gellert Community Centre and try their hand at controlling the robots the team created.

GDHS students Ryan Aselstyne and Grace Freeborn and The Regions provided musical entertainment throughout the night.

Local businesses Daal Roti and Blends and Bites provided food for those attending to enjoy while they listened to music or watched the robotics demonstrations.

The event grew out of the Town of Halton Hills Youth Culture Days Committee. Vats was a member of both the youth and adult Culture Days committees. She also won the Culture Days talent competition in 2023 and 2024.
