Halton Hills Black History Month programs focus on arts and culture

This February, the Town of Halton Hills invites residents to participate in events and workshops that showcase the significant contributions of Black artists and creators in Canada.

Free programs are being offered at the Halton Hills Public Library and Cultural Centre, Hillsview Active Living and Acton Youth Centre throughout the month. For full details visit the Town website and follow along on social media.  

“This year’s Black History Month programs will engage the public through visual art, music, and literature,” said Mayor Ann Lawlor. “These programs provide residents with an opportunity to learn from the personal stories and lived experiences of Black artists and cultural leaders in our community. Join in and celebrate the special insights that Black artists bring to our town.”

Featured programming for residents includes: 

  • "Explorations of Diasporic Experience Through the Liminal” - an exploration of experiences as a Black neurodiverse person by visual artist Miyakah Emon (Feb. 5 – March 3 at the Cultural Centre)
  • “A Story of Black History Told Through Art” - an online lecture with Francesca Durham, a member of the Halton Black History Awareness Society (Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m.)  
  • "Melanin in Me,” storytelling for school-aged children and their caregivers with author Cameile Henry, in partnership with the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton and Strengthen Hands (Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. at the library branch in Georgetown)
  • “Clef Notes to Canvas,” a painting workshop with Omar Hopkinson in partnership with the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (Feb. 10, 1-4 p.m. for ages 16+ at the Cultural Centre and Feb. 5, 4:30-7 p.m. for Youth Centre and Hillsview Active Living members)
