Some local youngsters are doing their part to give back this holiday season.
The students at Halton Hills Christian School (HHCS) are holding their annual Christmas musical, which will double as a fundraiser for Angel, a six-year-old Ugandan girl who needs surgery to correct a clubfoot.
“Our students are doing this (musical) to give God praise, which is our theme for the school this year, but it’s also to help this little girl to get her surgery,” HHCS Principal Angie Bonvanie said.
The play will take place at the HHCS in Georgetown Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. and Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The students, who are running the production with staff guidance, are putting on the humorous play The Night Shift Before Christmas. It takes place during the first-ever Christmas Eve in a fictional Bethlehem 24-hour diner called Mo’s Falafel House.
Owner Mo is worried that the business is too slow to keep being an all-night eatery. When he declares that “nothing ever happens at night in this sleepy little town," the audience knows hijinks are just around the corner.
A diverse age range of cast and crew awaits musical theatre lovers. Children as young as junior kindergarteners and as old as eighth graders are running the show.
"From set design to cast, lighting, sound, choreography, stage crew, soloists, full school choir, everyone is involved,” Bonvanie said. “We all work towards that main goal of sharing the good news story of Jesus' birth.”
The show is free to attend, however, donations towards Angel’s operation will be collected. The goal is $1,000, which Bonvanie is confident about achieving.
“We have a very generous community," she said.
Angel will receive her surgery through One4Another, a Canadian charity the school has partnered with that helps Ugandan children access surgical care.
HHCS is asking interested attendees to RSVP here ahead of time.
