The Halton Hills Minor Lacrosse Association is holding two session in March for new players interested in trying the sport.

The Halton Hills Lady Bulldogs will be hosting two free sessions for girls to try field lacrosse.

The sessions will be held Mar. 2 from 11 a.m. to noon and Mar. 23 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Dufferin Rural Heritage Community Centre in Acton.

The Lady Bulldogs currently have under-19 and under-15 girls field lacrosse teams, but due to seasons cancelled by COVID-19, there were no new players coming into the program in the younger age groups.

“We’re working to build our under-11 and under-13 teams with these try lacrosse events,” said Katie Veltman, the Halton Hills Minor Lacrosse Association’s director of girls junior field lacrosse.

The try lacrosse sessions are open to any girls born from 2012 to 2015, though Veltman said they did have a few players born in 2011 in their first session.

Players can register for one or both sessions, with each being limited to 30 players. Sticks will be provided for anyone who doesn’t have one.

Erica Evans, a member of the Canadian women’s field lacrosse team, will be on hand to help introduce players to the game.

Veltman said many of the senior Lady Bulldogs players come back to coach the younger teams.

“It’s become a common theme with our program and it’s great for them to have those strong female role models. I know my daughters love having that,” she said.

There are also plans for girls box lacrosse. The younger divisions of house league are co-ed, but to play rep box lacrosse, local players have previously had to go to other centres to play.

A free weekly drop-in gym session is available for players who want to try either box or field lacrosse. The sessions will be held every Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. throughout March at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Elementary School, 120 Sinclair Ave. in Georgetown. Helmets are required for those sessions.

You can register for the try lacrosse sessions online. For more information about the girls lacrosse programs, email [email protected].
