The Town of Halton Hills is gearing up to recognize its 50th anniversary with a New Year’s Levee.
The event is set for Jan. 10 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Halton Hills Cultural Centre. Everyone is welcome to mix and mingle and enjoy the special program, which includes entertainment, light refreshments, pictures from the past and photo ops, Halton Hills trivia and an address by Mayor Ann Lawlor.
Following the celebration, local historian Mark Rowe, an archivist with the Esquesing Historical Society, will host his ‘Halton Hills - The Sum of its Parts’ lecture in the John Elliot Theatre. The lecture has now sold out, but all are welcome to attend the levee portion of the evening.
“I am delighted to welcome the community to our festive but informal gathering as we celebrate the 50-year milestone since the Town of Halton Hills came into being,” said Mayor Ann Lawlor. “Our municipality is rich in history, which is preserved both through our residents, story-telling and architecture that brightens our streetscapes.”
The Town notes that lecture seats may become available on the evening of the event, with attending ticket holders receiving first right of refusal.
In 1974, the Province of Ontario mandated the amalgamation of Esquesing Township, Georgetown and Acton to form the Town of Halton Hills.
The 50th anniversary is also being commemorated through:
- Legacy grants to community organizations (successful applicants to be announced in January)
- Resources, history kits, historical archives and heritage tour books available at the Halton Hills Public Library
- A local Doors Open program (to run during Culture Days Sept. 20-Oct. 14) led by the Town’s Heritage Committee under the leadership of Councillor Joseph Racinsky.
