Here's how Smile Cookies sold in Georgetown this week will help local children

Today's kick off event celebrates how the funds raised will support Food4Kids Halton, which provides weekend food packages for children who rely on nutrition programs

A smile goes a long way and over the next week, it will also help to fight food insecurity.

Georgetown Tim Hortons has partnered with Food4Kids Halton for its Holiday Smile Cookie campaign. Between now and Nov. 24, all Smile Cookies sold at the 373 Mountainview Rd. S, 326 Guelph St., and 11 Mountainview Rd. N locations will see 50 per cent of all proceeds go to Food4Kids and the other 50 per cent to the Tim Hortons Foundation Summer Camp program.

“Food insecurity can be shocking,” said Food4Kids Halton board member Doug Lounsbury. “There are children in our neighbourhoods going through this.”

Food4Kids Halton helps feed more than 1,100 children that rely on nutrition programs by providing food for them for weekends. That number includes approximately 100 children in Halton Hills.

Last year, Food4KidsHalton distributed more than 41,000 food packages at 116 schools in the region. The packages typically contain breakfast, lunch and snacks for the weekend consisting of fruits, vegetables, bread and other ready-to-eat products.

“That’s how we make a community better. I love Food4Kids’ program,” said Halton Hills Mayor Ann Lawlor. “Tucking food into a backpack for the weekend, what an important way to make a difference.”

Monday’s kickoff saw the mayor and several members of council, members of the Chamber of Commerce and representatives of Food4Kids decorating cookies.

“We’re grateful to be a part of the Holiday Smile Cookie campaign," said Jennifer Sully-Ferraro, executive director, Food4Kids Halton.

"Every cookie sold in our local community helps us meet the growing demand for food among vulnerable children in Halton Hills, ensuring that we can say 'yes' every time a school calls with a child in need — without a waitlist.”

Meanwhile, Smile Cookies sold at Acton Tim Hortons, along with the location at Hwy. 7/22 Sideroad will benefit Links2Care, a not-for-profit community support organization that provides care programs for local seniors and adults with disabilities, children and families, and people of all ages in need.
