Georgetown will be alive with colour next month during a Holi celebration that rings in the arrival of spring.
Aditee Goswami will be marking the holiday with an event called Rang Barse (Colour Burst) on March 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Gellert Community Centre.
Like the Diwali event Goswami hosted last year, Rang Barse will showcase food, performance and, as she puts it, “the rich culture of India.”
One of the enduring images of Holi is how richly colourful it is. Celebrants throw brightly coloured powder at each other until everyone is caked with it.
That part of the festival will begin at around 4 p.m. on the same day in the Gellert’s parking lot.
“People will be bringing their own colours,” Goswami said. “You can just wash it off at any point."
Celebrants often mix the powder in with water, but due to the Canadian weather in March, it will only be a dry, organic powder.
Attendees can buy Holi T-shirts for $5 at the event if they want extra peace of mind about their clothes.
All are welcome. Tickets are $25 for kids between the ages of three and 12 and $35 for everyone else.
To take part, email or e-transfer Goswami at [email protected]. Organizers are aiming for a capacity of between 170 and 180 people.
When asked why she takes on such a role in her community, Goswami said she wants to bring people together.
