After much anticipation, Acton finally has a sushi restaurant.
Misao Sushi and its staff of highly-trained chefs are stepping up to satisfy the cravings of Acton and beyond. They hope do this with a variety of tasty offerings, like the dynamite roll and the California roll.
The new Japanese eatery officially opened its doors last week in the space formerly occupied by Lily Thai in the downtown core.
“In Acton, I saw that there is no sushi restaurant,” said owner Abraham Meang, an immigrant from Seoul, South Korea. “People [of Acton] said thank you to me. [They say] because I opened a sushi restaurant in Acton, they don’t have to go very far away like Mississauga or Georgetown.”
Meang says the most popular menu item for Actonians so far has been the dynamite roll. Other menu offerings include unagi (eel), spicy tuna and California rolls, along with sashimi. The more adventurous can try things like octopus sushi or sweet tofu skin sushi.
But Japanese food lovers would be delighted to know that sushi is not the only thing on the menu. Appetizers like grilled octopus balls called takoyaki, gyoza (dumplings), edamame and spring rolls are there to help prime the belly for your choice of main course.
Meang’s journey to Acton has been a long one. He came to Canada in 2012. From there, he enrolled in Niagara College’s culinary program. He has worked in several restaurants, including three Japanese ones over seven years.
At the second one, he met his mentor who has more than three decades of experience under his belt. He now works with Meang at Misao.
When asked why he wanted to start his own business, Meang said that he likes being a leader and wants to be his own boss. He also likes the sushi business because he enjoys the challenge of the specialized knife skills needed to be a sushi chef.
His restaurant mostly provides cold foods like sushi, but one of his goals is to expand the menu and include hot dishes soon.
