The loud hum of chainsaws and wood chippers near Poplar Avenue in Acton may have some local residents wondering what's going on.

According to Metrolinx, which manages the public transportation network throughout the GTA, it's removing trees to expand the Kitchener line track in the area.

“As a part of the GO expansion program, Metrolinx is undertaking vegetation control and tree clearing work within the railway corridor,” said a company spokesperson.

Metrolinx has indicated the measure will help create a clear buffer “to make room for a new passing track in Acton to enable two-way, all-day service to Kitchener.”

The Kitchener Line, on which Acton and Georgetown GO stations are stops, is being upgraded to increase service. Two-way, all-day service - as the name implies - would provide continuous service in both directions.

Along with the passing track near Acton, a storage track for maintenance will be built near Rockwood and the platform at Guelph station will be expanded, among other things.

Expansion on the Kitchener Line to deliver two-way, all-day GO service began last May. Once completed, stops between Georgetown and Kitchener station will operate every 30 minutes, and every 15 minutes between Mount Pleasant and Union at peak times.

Metrolinx has indicated that it's making “every effort to replant or find additional ways to contribute to the environment throughout all of our projects, where possible.”
