Burlington MP Karina Gould has announced her intent to run in the federal Liberal leadership race.
Gould posted on X this morning that she's running for the leadership because "we need to rebuild our party so that we can keep building our country. We need new leadership to fight for everyday Canadians."
Gould intends to hold a media event on Sunday in Burlington where she will make her announcement next to her family and friends.
This morning, she's pictured walking in a snowy, north Burlington neighbourhood, with the Niagara Escarpment in the background.
"There's a lot going on right now. I understand these past years haven't just been hard, they've been exhausting: the economy, climate change and what's going on south of the border leave all of us feeling nervous about the future," she said.
She went on to say that the Liberal party needs a leader who understands what people are going through and works everyday to make their lives better: "a leader who stands up to bullies and who won't back down.
"There are people out there tearing down Canada, saying the country is broken, saying we should become American," she continued, and went on to say that is not true.
Canada is about hockey rinks, neighbours shovelling driveways for each other, she added.
She intends to be the leader for a new generation. "I'm here for Canada, today, tomorrow and for years to come."
At this point, the federal Liberal leadership race appears to be a two-way contest between Chrystia Freeland and Mark Carney. Anita Anand, Francois-Philippe Champagne, Christy Clark, Sean Fraser and Melanie Joly have said that they aren't seeking the party leadership, and in some cases that they are planning to leave Parliament.
