The main work to create a new parkette in Georgetown named after a late Halton Hills councillor is now complete.

Construction of the Moya Johnson Parkette began in August and wrapped up last month at the corner of Mill and McNabb streets.

While a formal grand opening celebration won't take place until the spring, local residents are welcome to visit and use the park now.

Town landscape architect Mark Taylor said the municipality has transformed what was a gravel parking area into a "high-quality neighbourhood parkette."

He noted some of the space's features include “a compact playground, landscaped berms, naturalized areas and integration to Silver Creek,” among other things.

A saucer swing, climbing areas and a talk tube are some of the amenities for children at the playground.

The space was originally going to be named the Mill Street Parkette, but council voted last year to rename it as a tribute to their colleague.

Johnson died in February following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

A memorial for the well-liked politician from a local book club can be found at the base of a tree in the parkette. It reads, “In memory of Moya - a gracious lady and good friend with a giant heart.”
