Residents have reported seeing a bear along the Hungry Hollow trail this week.

The Town of Halton Hills has posted notices along the Hungry Hollow walking trail after a resident reported seeing a bear Monday.

The following day, another resident reported seeing bear tracks along the trail.

A social media post indicates a bear was spotted last Saturday (Jan. 27) in the ravine near the Mountainview Road bridge.

The Town has notified both Halton Regional Police and the Ministry of Natural Resources about the sighting.

The notice posted by the Town recommends the following if you encounter a bear:

  • Slowly back away while keeping the bear in sight
  • Wave your arms and make noise
  • Get inside a vehicle or building
  • Leave a bear alone if it’s in a tree.

You should not:

  • Run away or climb a tree
  • Kneel down
  • Make direct eye contact
  • Approach the bear or move closer
  • Let your dog off its leash.

After the encounter, you can report the sighting to 1-866-514-2327. If a bear poses an immediate threat to your safety, you should call 911.
