A teenage neighbour is being credited with helping three people escape a house fire on Jessop Court in Georgetown Tuesday night.
The residents, an elderly couple and their son, were unaware that a fire had started in the car port of their home until the teenager knocked on their door.
“To get out, they had to go through the door and past the fire,” said Deputy Fire Chief Bruce Morrison, “so this was quite a good deed to alert them.”
All escaped without injury.
Morrison said there was a significant fire in the car port when the Halton Hills Fire Department arrived on scene at approximately 8 p.m. It also burned up into the house’s attic.
Crews from all three stations quickly extinguished the fire. One car was completely destroyed while the other was damaged.
Damage to the cars and house is estimated at $250,000.
Heat from the fire also caused damage to the siding and electrical meter of the neighbouring house.
Morrison said the fire appears to have originated in one of the cars.
