It's nearly Canada Day, and with that comes barbecues, fireworks, and of course the annual Glen Williams parade.
This year, festivities for Canada Day in the Glen start at 8 a.m. July 1 with breakfast in the park, followed by other events that run throughout the day until 5 p.m.
“Our parade kicks off at noon and will feature members of the Legion, local businesses, the citizen of the year, and a number of characters,” said event volunteer Bryan Robinson. “There are 30 different floats that will be featured this year. Last year we even had Batman.”
The parade will run from Beaver Street to Main Street, with the roads closed for approximately two hours. Out in the park and away from the parade, families can take part in a bean bag toss, explore local vendors, compete in an obstacle course, grab a bite to eat at a food truck and hop in the bubble tent.
“There will be an opening ceremony in the gazebo in the park (at 1 p.m.), and we’ll announce the new citizen of the year,” noted Robinson.
For the furry, feathered or reptile members of the family, the day will include a pet show at 2 p.m. where visitors are encouraged to bring their pets and show them off for the town. Regular pet shows may require years of precise training to win first prize, but this one is more focused on the awards for longest ears, or fluffiest tail.
To close out the day, the annual charity duck race will be held, with proceeds going to the Georgetown Little Theatre and Glen Williams Town Hall. Locals can enter a rubber duck in the race for a fee, and at 4 p.m., all ducks will be released into the river.
The winners will be announced during the closing ceremony in the park.
A shuttle bus will take residents from the Superstore parking lot down to the Glen starting at 9 a.m. The last bus back will leave Preston’s Food Mart at 5:30 p.m.
