Georgetown’s Trent Cull is back in the NHL.
Cull is joining the Calgary Flames as an assistant coach. The team announced on the weekend that the 51-year-old would be joining the team on an interim basis.
“For me it’s great to get here, it’s nice changing gears and having new challenges and it’s great being around new guys and a fresh feel,” Cull said on the Flames’ website. “It’s been enjoyable, but it’s time to go to work.”
Cull was in his second season as the head coach of the Flames’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers. The Wranglers were atop the AHL standings with a record of 21-9-1.
Over his two seasons with the Wranglers, Cull has put together a 56-37-10 record. If Cull returns to the Wranglers before February, he will coach in the AHL all-star game for the second year in a row. But no doubt, he wouldn’t be disappointed to miss the game if it means he’s still on an NHL bench.
Cull’s first game with the Flames was Dec. 31 against the Vancouver Canucks. Cull got his first NHL experience as an assistant coach with Vancouver in 2022 after five seasons as the head coach of their AHL teams in Utica and Abbotsford. He was let go along with head coach Bruce Boudreau in January 2023.
Cull is 217-153-42 over seven seasons as an AHL head coach.
