The Halton Regional Police Service has decided to stop releasing the names of those charged with impaired driving.

In response to an inquiry from HaltonHillsToday, the local police service issued the following statement:

“The Halton Regional Police Service has been publishing the names of those charged with impaired driving twice weekly since 2017. While the primary aim has always been deterrence, a review of these statistics in Halton Region since then has shown no discernible impact on the overall number of charges laid for the offence.

"As such, and to enable us to provide more fulsome information about the nature of impaired driving on our roads, the decision has been made to discontinue the practice for the time being.”

Media relations officer Const. Steve Elms said Halton Police will still provide pertinent details to the media regarding impaired driving occurrences - without names - "upon request, and provided we are in a position to disclose the information."
