The annual Walk or Run for Georgetown Hospital is set for September 29, 2024, with an ambitious goal to raise $90,000 toward critical healthcare equipment. This year’s event, presented by RBC, introduces a 1K route, enhancing accessibility and inclusivity.
"We've always aimed to reflect our community's diversity through our events," said Sandra Taylor, Executive Director of the Georgetown Hospital Foundation. "The new 1K route, fully paved and accessible, invites participants of all ages and abilities to join, from toddlers to those with mobility challenges."
The foundation's current fundraising focus is to upgrade Georgetown Hospital's mammogram technology, which will require $765,000 to bring in a state-of-the-art machine capable of breast Tomosynthesis — a 3D imaging technology that promises clearer and more accurate detection of abnormalities in breast tissue.
"This new technology is crucial. It provides clearer images, which reduces the need for patients to undergo additional stressful and inconvenient scans," Taylor explained.
The importance of the new mammogram machine
In Ontario, breast cancer remains a significant health concern for women, with approximately one in eight facing a diagnosis in their lifetime.
Each year, thousands of new cases emerge, underscoring the urgency of proactive measures. While treatment options are advancing, early detection remains paramount in improving outcomes and reducing mortality rates. Mammograms, the primary screening tool, can identify abnormalities in breast tissue long before they can be felt manually.
The Ontario Breast Cancer Screening Program has recently expanded to include women aged 40 – 49, meaning an additional 1,800 patients will require screening each year in the Halton region.

The new mammogram machine, which includes Tomosynthesis, offers 3D imaging of breast tissue, enhancing clarity and accuracy, particularly in dense breast tissue.
“For radiologists, Tomosynthesis's 3D imaging provides a more comprehensive view of breast tissue, enhancing their ability to identify and analyze abnormalities with greater confidence and precision,” stated Dr. Jillian A. Feberwee, Breast Imaging Lead Radiologist at Halton Healthcare Services.
“This leads to earlier cancer detection, early diagnosis, and treatment, ultimately improving patient outcomes.”
The importance of this technology is highlighted by the personal experiences of community members like Karen V., who shared her own story about the impact of timely detection.
“I learned the hard way about the importance of regular mammogram screenings, having previously underestimated my risk due to a lack of family history and being unaware of my dense breast tissue, which hid my cancer from touch. Fortunately, my non-genetic cancer was detected early,” she shared.
“Georgetown’s new 3D mammogram technology, designed to detect the hardest-to-spot abnormalities, represents a significant step forward in the ability to fight this disease through early detection.”
