The Georgetown Lions Club and St. George’s Church recently partnered to bring Santa Claus for breakfast on Dec. 14.

This marked the second anniversary of the successful event. Over 150 people sat down to a freshly-cooked breakfast prepared by the volunteers from the church and the Lions Club. While they waited for Santa’s arrival, the children were provided with colouring materials and - most importantly - a form with all their details and wishes for Christmas, which Santa would answer before they left.

The crowd, which ranged from babies in arms to senior citizens, greeted Santa with enthusiasm and had a chance to sit on his knee and get cherished family photos, a Christmas candy cane and a cookie.

The event raised $1,600. An equal share went to the Georgetown Bread Basket food bank and the Salvation Army. In addition, many of the guests brought donations of food and some of the supplies used in preparing the meal were given to the food bank.

In a joint statement from Reverend Cheryl Barker and Lion John Fini they said, “The church and the Lions Club are both dedicated to helping those that need some help and we want to organize events that are fun and meaningful to the community; Breakfast with Santa fulfills those goals. We look forward to further collaboration.”

The Lions have had a busy month with Santa. On Nov. 16 the club brought Santa to town for the 93rd annual Santa Claus Parade. Two weeks later, the club served up 600 free hot dogs at the Light Up the Hills ignition night, and then Breakfast with Santa.

At the parade, the Lions received about 175 letters to Santa, which usually go to Canada Post. With the postal strike, the Lions made sure that Santa got the letters, which he read and answered, and then Lions volunteers delivered them personally to each home.
