St. John’s United Church has created a new brand to bring attention to the “exceptional” acoustics its Georgetown sanctuary offers for musical performances.

The space inside the church at 11 Guelph St. will now be known as The Sanctuary Concert Hall. It has an elevated 32-foot wide by 26-foot deep stage, 12-channel audio board, video projection for multimedia presentations, and flexible seating that can be arranged in any configuration, with a capacity for up to 160 people theatre-style.

“We have known for quite some time based on the comments of performers and audiences alike that the acoustics in our sanctuary are very good,” said Rob Allison, co-chair of St. John’s United Church Council. “So recently we did some research and determined our acoustical characteristics are right up there with Carnegie Hall and other well-known concert halls.”

The architecture of the sanctuary naturally creates a great space for performing and listening, he noted.

“Knowing this has inspired us to create a name and a brand for our performance space that we hope will create opportunities for performers, both local and out of town, plus raise awareness in the community around the quality of the sound they hear when they attend performances in The Sanctuary Concert Hall,” said fellow St. John’s co-chair Marcia Moorcroft.

Recently, The Georgetown Bach Chorale performed in The Sanctuary Concert Hall to a full house. Artistic Director Ron Greidanus said the group chose the hall for its performance as “this place makes us sound so good, plus the large stage is a big benefit. And for me personally, the beautiful Kawai grand piano is huge.”

In addition to musical presentations, The Sanctuary Concert Hall can be used for lectures, meetings, rehearsal space and more.
