The Halton Hills Fire Department (HHFD) is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association to recognize Fire Prevention Week from October 8 to 14.

This year’s campaign theme of “Cooking safety starts with you. Pay attention to fire prevention” works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe when cooking.

“Whether cooking in the kitchen or over a campfire, accidents happen and flames can get out of control. Be alert, keep flammable items such as oven mitts or dishtowels away from the stove top and know how to put out small grease fires and open flames,” said Fire Chief Jon Rehill. “If in doubt, have everyone exit the home and call 9-1-1.”

Here are some key safe cooking tips:
    •    If you are sleepy or consumed alcohol, don’t use the oven or stove top
    •    Remain in the kitchen while frying, boiling or grilling food
    •    Check food regularly that is simmering, baking, or roasting
    •    Keep flammable items away from your stove top
    •    Smother stove top flames by placing a lid over the pan and turning off the burner.

The HHFD will have displays set up at local hardware stores from October 8 to 14 to support this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign. Those who stop by these displays can pick up important information, including how to create a home fire escape plan.

Staff will visit these displays throughout the week to speak with the community about fire safety. To find out when the displays will be staffed, follow the Halton Hills Fire Department on X (formerly known as Twitter) @HaltonHillsFD.
