Life goes on even amid extreme heat warnings this summer from Environment Canada.
The latest report predicts a heatwave starting today (July 8) and going into the next day.
The Town of Halton Hills has thrown open the doors of several of its facilities to help residents combat the heat. These cooling centres will give the public respite from the climbing mercury between 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will have access to water refilling stations, sitting areas and washrooms.
Facilities in Georgetown and Acton will take part in the initiative. These include:
Acton
Halton Hills Public Library - Acton's library is located at 17 River St.
The Acton Arena and Community Centre - This facility will be available during weekdays only.
Georgetown
Mold-Masters SportsPlex - Georgetown's sports arena is located at 221 Guelph St.
The Gellert Community Centre - The Gellert also has a pool in case one wants to stay extra cool.
Halton Hills Public Library - The Georgetown branch is located at 9 Church St.
Though everyone is at risk for heat injuries, the Town reminds residents that the most at risk are older adults 65 years of age and over, young children and infants, and the chronically ill. UV rays are strongest between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The Town also advises people to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, take cool showers, close blinds and shutters and, of course, drink lots of water and juice. The Town urges residents to check in on neighbours and family members and to never leave pets or children in cars.
