Local residents can soon share their thoughts on Dufferin Aggregates' proposal to expand its extraction areas east of the Milton Quarry and further into Halton Hills.

Halton Region is holding a virtual statutory public meeting on the subject on May 17 at 9:30 a.m. for members of the community to provide feedback on the plan.

As its name suggests, the lion's share of the quarry is located in Milton. But a small section extends across the border into Halton Hills. Dufferin Aggregates is hoping to expand further east into Halton Hills, adding about 60 hectares of land.

The Milton Quarry east extension application is currently under technical review by Halton Region, Town of Halton Hills, Town of Milton, Conservation Halton, and Niagara Escarpment Commission through a Joint Agency Review Team (JART) framework.

The Region says it's working closely with JART partners to ensure all stakeholders, including the public, understand each stage of approval for the application.

Halton says it's committed to ensuring the public can easily access information about the review process to submit timely input at each stage of review.

Regional Council is responsible for making a decision on the proposed Regional Official Plan Amendment.

The Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry, through the Aggregate Resources Act approval process, is ultimately responsible for making a decision on the quarry expansion.

JART is responsible for providing technical advice to each agency that reviews the application, the Region said in a news release, adding that JART is dedicated to ensuring policies and regulations are followed, and the interests of Halton residents are protected at each stage of the review.
