IN PHOTOS: Red Nose Day raises over $1,200 for Townsend Smith Foundation

Annual fundraiser continues to grow, raising almost 60 per cent more than last year

Pinocchio’s nose isn’t the only one that’s growing.

Red Nose Day, relaunched two years ago, is continuing to gain momentum. Originally held in 1992 as Lighten Up Canada Day, the event sees thousands of residents don red roses every Feb. 6.

It was revived in 2023 as Red Nose Day to raise funds for the Townsend Smith Foundation, which is building north Halton’s first hospice at the edge of Georgetown. Individuals, groups and businesses purchase red noses for $2 to wear during the day.

This year’s event raised $1,232.54, almost 60 per cent more than last year.

“It was great,” said organizer Nancy Wilkes. “I’m smiling a little wider today.”

Wilkes said sales of the noses were up this year, but the total received a boost from additional donations. As an example, The Gallery at Bennett Village purchased 60 noses to sell to residents, but with purchasers giving more than $2, it donated $308.

Wilkes said Robyn King Desjardins Insurance still had its noses from last year, but again donated to cause.

Sobeys, No Frills, The Salvation Army and the Town of Halton Hills bought noses for staff or customers, and the Acton Curling Club also purchased noses. Five classes are Robert Little Public School also participated.

In addition to being a fun winter fundraiser, Wilkes said people are also becoming more aware of the Townsend Smith Foundation.

“It’s a great cause,” she said.
