Local kids experience day in the life of a Halton Hills firefighter

Family won the experience through a silent auction in support of the Townsend Smith Foundation

Four lucky kids along with their parents got to tour the Halton Hills Fire Department’s Maple Avenue station Tuesday evening and experience some first-hand firefighter training.

The children's mothers, who are sisters, won the unique experience as a silent auction prize offered by the Town of Halton Hills, fire department and firefighter association at the Hospice Ball gala in support of the Townsend Smith Foundation earlier this year that raised over $32,000 to build a hospice in north Halton.

The kids were picked up at home in a fire truck for the ride to the station and were joined by Mayor Ann Lawlor for the ride.

Once at the station, they were able to try their hand manning a fire hose for firefighter dodgeball, learn how to use a portable fire extinguisher, try on firefighter gear and checkout the department's ATV and new aerial ladder.

The evening included pizza and cake in the station with the firefighters.
