Dear Editor,
re: Traffic forecast shows crushing gridlock ahead -- even with the 413
So, the Ministry of Transportation's own reports, obtained through Freedom of Information, show that building Hwy. 413 would only save 1,200 people the 30 minutes they keep trotting out.
Jessica Smith Cross' excellent reporting highlights the real reason for the proposed highway -- facilitating car-dependent sprawl development. The only people benefiting from this are Ford's developer friends who own land all along the proposed route.
This government shouldn't waste our money when there's a perfectly good, vastly underused highway, the 407 ETR, running parallel to the proposed Hwy 413. Subsidizing tolls for commercial trucks on the 407 would immediately relieve congestion.
A new highway would also destroy farmland, forests, wetlands, Greenbelt and habitat for endangered species. Once they're gone, they aren't coming back.
Despite the huge signs all along the proposed route, Hwy. 413 is not a done deal!
