The Indigospirit location in the Georgetown Market Place is closing at the end of the month.
Local Indigo loyalty reward customers received an email Tuesday stating, “It is with regret that I announce the closure of our Indigospirit Georgetown Market Place location on March 1.”
Among those receiving the email was Lawrie Dexter. An avid reader who often bought gifts at the store, Dexter said she was surprised by the announcement.
“It’s really disappointing, especially when we have a growing community,” she said. “It's coming at a time when we’re being encouraged to support Canadian companies and shop local. They promoted Canadian authors.”
The email said it “was a difficult decision” and thanked its customers for their support. The company encouraged local residents to visit its stores in Milton and Brampton.
Indigo could not be reached for comment.
“I want to support businesses in town, but we don’t have any other book stores that I know of,” Dexter said.
While she didn’t rule out going to the stores in the neighbouring communities, she said it would have to be for a specific purpose, rather than browsing and discovering new books.
“It was very convenient,” she said. “The staff was always great. You could pop in, tell them I’m looking for a baby gift, or something for a five-year-old boy and they were great at giving suggestions.”
