Which outdoor ice activities would you like to see in Halton Hills?

The Town wants to know and is currently conducting a second survey on the topic as it prepares an Outdoor Ice Strategy (OIS).

This time around, the municipality is looking for residents’ feedback on options to augment outdoor ice recreation in the town.

The five options are:

  • Improving the natural ice rink program with a focus on Prospect Park and Georgetown Fairgrounds, to name a few
  • A proposed refrigerated ice pad at the Gellert Park expansion
  • Proposed skating trail and rinks on Fairy Lake
  • Synthetic ice surface for special events
  • Formalizing the volunteer ice rink program, where residents donate their time to maintain rinks.

The purpose of the OIS is to find out which outdoor ice activities the public wants, how to improve outdoor ice facilities, the feasibility of winter activities on Fairy Lake and to see if outdoor ice rinks are viable in a changing climate, among other things.

“The Town’s Recreation and Parks Strategic Plan (2020) included recommendations to consider expanded recreational activities in all four seasons, including winter,” Director of Parks and Open Space Kevin Okimi told HaltonHillsToday.

As a result of this and increased interest in outdoor winter recreation during the pandemic, staff began a study looking at opportunities for enhancement.
