Police services from across Ontario gathered at the Halton Police Service headquarters this week to officially launch the Festive R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign aimed to deter and prevent impaired driving throughout the holiday season.
The annual campaign promotes traffic enforcement and raises awareness about the dangers associated with alcohol- and drug-impaired driving.
Wednesday's event included police services and campaign supporters dedicated to promoting safe driving throughout Ontario, including the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP), OPP and the Halton Regional Police Service.
This year alone, Halton Police have arrested and charged 357 residents for impaired driving.
"Our message is simple: Just don't do it," said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner.
"The consequences of driving under the influence cause tremendous ramifications for communities, for families, and for loved ones."
The season's campaign will see an increase in roadside spot checks on important roadways as well as off-ramps of highways.
The province has seen 44 deaths this year from impaired-related driving, according to OPP Deputy Commissioner Rohan Thompson.
Halton residents are urged to take public transit or a taxi or have a designated driver during their holiday travels.
