Concerns over crime in Georgetown have prompted a community leader to organize a local workshop emphasizing safety.

Georgetown's Aditee Goswami is joining forces with the police, paramedics and fire department to host the Georgetown Community Safety Workshop.

On Friday (Sept. 20), the first responders will be on hand at the Gellert Community Centre at 6 p.m. to share safety tips and tricks and will take questions from attendees.

Goswami’s neighbour sustained injuries at the hands of home invaders in mid-August. Though she had been in talks to put together a safety workshop well before the incident, it gave her more of a reason to push for one.

"The number of incidents happening here is alarming," she said. "Here in our small little Georgetown, we aren’t even thinking that these types of crimes would happen.

“We need to be mentally prepared for what might happen and what measures we can take."

The event is free and there is no need to register.
