The Club at North Halton is hosting the Canadian Women's Senior Championship. Play continues today and Thursday. Admission is free and spectators are welcome.

Ellen Port fired a bogey-free round of 69 Tuesday to take a three-shot lead after the opening round of the Canadian Women’s Senior Championship at The Club at North Halton.

The Missouri native recorded three birdies, two on the front nine, one on the back.

“These greens can certainly see a lot of three putts and I avoided three putts,” Port said following the round. “I had a few longer putts and I managed those well and let the round unfold.”

Portland’s Lara Tennant, who has already won the Scottish and Irish Senior Women’s Amateur this year, shot an even-par 72 and sits tied with two-time champion Terrill Samuel of Etobicoke.

“My ball striking was excellent, I had a few sloppy ones on the back nine,” Samuel said. “I thought I had good speed on the greens today and hopefully tomorrow a few more go in, otherwise it was a pretty solid round.”

Defending champion and former Georgetown resident Mary-Ann Hayward is tied for fourth after shooting a 75 to stay within striking distance. Carolyn Janidlo of Moncton, N.B. also shot a 75.

Admission to the tournament is free.

Port will tee off from the 10th hole at 12:50 p.m. Other notable players are Tennant, Samuel, Sue Wooster (12:40 p.m., 10th hole); Hayward, Jackie Little, Helene Chartrand (1:20 p.m., 1st hole); Shelly Stouffer, Judith Kyrinis (1:30 p.m., 1st hole).

The field will be cut to the top 70 golfers after today's (Wednesday) round and the Canadian champion will be determined Thursday.
